What a South African Hire Really Costs in 2026: A UK Employers Total-Cost Breakdown

The claim that South Africa offers a 50 per cent saving on UK headcount costs is common. UK companies hear it, believe it in principle, and then pause because nobody has shown them the actual numbers. This post does that.

Below are worked cost comparisons for three roles UK clients ask about most: a mid-level software developer, a qualified accountant, and a customer-support specialist. All figures use 1 March 2026 statutory rates and a GBP/ZAR rate of R22.50 to the pound.

What changed on 1 March 2026

Two statutory adjustments affect every South African employer this year.

  • National Minimum Wage rose 5% to R30.23 per hour.

  • UIF ceiling increased to R17,712 per month, capping employer UIF contributions at R177.12 per employee per month regardless of salary.

  • SDL (Skills Development Levy) applies at 1% of total annual payroll for employers with a payroll above R500,000 per year.

  • COIDA (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases) is assessed annually; approximates 1% of payroll for office-based roles.

These figures form the statutory floor for any honest cost model.

The three roles

For each role, the South African total employer cost includes: gross salary, employer UIF, SDL, COIDA, medical aid contribution, equipment amortisation, and the Cape Resources EOR fee. The UK comparator is gross salary plus employer National Insurance at 13.8% above the secondary threshold of GBP 9,100.

Mid-level Software Developer

South African gross: R420,000 per year (R35,000 per month). A mid-level developer in Cape Town, Johannesburg, or Stellenbosch with three to five years of commercial experience across a standard enterprise stack.

  • Gross salary: R420,000 / GBP 18,667

  • Employer UIF (capped at R177.12 per month): R2,124 / GBP 94

Annual saving: GBP 19,052 - 58% of the UK equivalent cost.

What this means in practice

Placing all three roles together saves approximately GBP 97,000 per year compared with equivalent UK headcount. That figure excludes any office or bench cost.

The Cape Resources EOR fee in these figures covers legal employment of the candidate in South Africa, SARS PAYE registration and monthly submissions, UIF and SDL administration, onboarding documentation, and HR support throughout the engagement. There are no setup fees and no local entity requirement on your side.

Notes and assumptions

  • GBP/ZAR rate: R22.50 to the pound (May 2026).

  • Salaries are mid-market; actual figures depend on experience and role specification.

  • Medical aid: employer contribution estimated at R2,000 to R2,500 per month. Some clients offer a cash allowance instead.

  • Equipment: one-off R20,000 hardware set amortised over 36 months. Clients who supply their own equipment remove this line.

  • UK employer NI: 2026/27 secondary threshold GBP 9,100, rate 13.8%.

  • COIDA: standard office-based approximation; your actual COID assessment will vary by industry classification.
